Mae Hong Son

The beauty of natural resources of Mae Hong Son Province, or “the city of three-season fog”, is pretty familiar and well-known among travelers for a long time. Samples of the well-known tourist spots are Thung Dok Bua Tong (wild sunflower field), Lod Cave, Mae Surin Waterfall, and Pai River.

Mae Hong Son locates in Northwest of Thailand in North region and connects with Union of Myanmar.

The geography of Mae Hong Son is the complicate high mountains that consist of rich and complete forests and North-South range. Thanon Thong Chai Range is separated into 3 ranges, which are West Thanon Thong Chai Range that is a boundary line between Thailand and Myanmar, Middle Thanon Thong Chai Range that separate Yuam River from Mae Chaem River, and East Thanon Thong Chai Range that connects with Chiang Mai. Due to the richness of forest, Thanon Thong Chai Range is the origin of many outstanding water resources that include streams, rivers, and waterfall such as Pai River, the biggest river in Mae Hong Son, Salawin River that is a boundary line between Thailand and Myanmar, Yuam River, Lamad River, etc.

Total area of Mae Song Son is 12,681,259 square kilometers and was separated into 7 District, which are Pai District, Pang Mapha District, Muang District (Center of provincial district), Khun Yuam, Mae La Noi, Mae Sariang and Sop Moie.

Mae Hong Son is located at the West end of North region and connected to Myanmar. It is 964 kilometers away from Bangkok. Because Mae Hong Son is surrounded by a valley, all travelers who visit Mae Hong Son will be enamoured by charming scenery along the way. Although some routes are complicate and consist of a thousand curves, but a lifetime impression is printed in mind of all travelers.

How To Get There: 4 Ways to reach Mae Hong Son
1) By Car (Private)
There are 2 routes to Mae Hong Son, which are Bangkok-Mae Hong Son or Bangkok-Chiang Mai – Mae Hong Son.

Bangkok – Mae Hong Son
– To use the highway no. 1 until you reach Toen District of Lampang Province. Then you turn left to highway no. 1103. This way will pass to Hod District and then you use : the highway no. 108 to enter Mae Hong Son j from Mae Sariang District. This route is not quite popular because the road is quite dangerous.

– The other way is go to Tak Province by using highway no.1 and turn left to higher way no. 105 to pass Mae Sod. Mae Ra Mad and Tha Song Yang District to enter Mae Hong Son from Sop Moei District. This route is to hug the boundary line of Thai and Myanmar.

Remark: You can go to Chiang Mai from Khun Yuam District by passing Mae Chaem District.

Bangkok – Chiang Mai – Mae Hong Son
To use highway no.1 to Nakhon Sawan, Kampaengpetch until you reach Lampang. Then you have to enter highway no. 11 to Chiang Mai. And then you will go to Mae Hong Son from Chiang Mai. From Mae Hong Son to Chiang Mai is a favorite route of many travelers. This way, you have to enter “Mae Taeng District – Pai District” by highway no. 107 and then turn left to Mae Taeng along the highway no. 1095 and enters Pai District to Mae Hong Son

2) By Bus (Public)
Bangkok-Mae Hong Son
Only one trip the leaves at 6 p.m. and arrive Mae Hong Son at 7 a.m. on the next day. The traveling expense is 418 Bath.

4) By Air

There is no flight go direct to Mae Hong Son. You have to go to Chiang Mai and then go to Mae Hong Son. Thai Airways International and Nok Air operate daily flight between Chiang Mai – Mae Hong Son. Please call for flight schedule
